Malaysian Sambal & Coconut Tofu

Used extensively in Malaysia, Sambal Oelek is a basic paste or sauce made by blending chillies. Sambal is used as a base or in Rempah (spice paste) for cooking. It can also be served as a condiment at the dinner table.


  • 1 Lime, grated rind & juice
  • 4 tbsp Malay Taste Sambal Oelek
  • 2 tsp Thai Taste Turmeric
  • 2 tsp freshly grated Ginger
  • 1 small handful of Fresh Coriander - Chopped
  • Thai Taste Vegan Fish Sauce to taste
  • 200ml Thai Taste Coconut Milk
  • 400g Tofu - chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • Serve with Lime wedges, extra Sambal Oelek and Thai Taste Sticky rice

Steps for cooking

  • 1.In a bowl, mix together the lime rind and juice, sambal oelek, turmeric, ginger, coriander and vegan fish sauce.
  • 2. Add this paste to a cooking pan and place on high heat, add a splash of the coconut milk to stop the paste from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  • 3. Add the chopped tofu to the paste and mix, ensuring that they are evenly coated.
  • 4. Add the remaining coconut milk and simmer for a further 5 mins, until the tofu is cooked.
  • 5. Serve with Thai Taste sticky rice, lime wedges and some more sambal oelek!
